SIBO and H pylori Evaluation and Treatment in Albuquerque, NM

Digestive symptoms can affect your energy, nutrition, metabolism, and overall well-being. When symptoms persist, it may be important to look beyond diet alone and evaluate possible gastrointestinal conditions. At Freya’s Lair Medical Spa, we can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether testing for conditions such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) or Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) may be appropriate.

We do not perform SIBO or H. pylori testing directly in our office. When clinically appropriate, our provider can help coordinate testing through an appropriate outside laboratory or testing service.

What Is SIBO

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, commonly called SIBO, occurs when an excessive number of bacteria are present in the small intestine. These bacteria can interfere with normal digestion and may contribute to symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, excessive gas, changes in bowel habits, and food intolerance.

Because these symptoms can overlap with many other digestive conditions, testing may be recommended to help determine whether SIBO could be contributing to your concerns.

SIBO Breath Testing

SIBO is commonly evaluated using a noninvasive breath test. During the test, you drink a specific sugar solution and provide breath samples at scheduled intervals.

The samples are analyzed for gases produced by intestinal bacteria, most commonly hydrogen and methane. Changes in these gas levels can provide useful information about bacterial activity within the digestive tract.

Breath testing allows your provider to evaluate your symptoms using objective data rather than relying on symptoms alone.

Why Does the Type of Gas Matter

The type of gas detected during breath testing may help provide additional information about your digestive symptoms.
Elevated hydrogen levels may be associated with certain patterns of bacterial overgrowth and can sometimes occur alongside diarrhea or frequent bowel movements.
Elevated methane levels are often associated with slower intestinal movement and constipation. Methane-related findings may also be referred to as intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO).
Understanding the pattern of gas production can help your provider develop a more individualized treatment approach.

What Is H. pylori

Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori, is a type of bacteria that can infect the stomach lining. Some people may have no noticeable symptoms, while others may experience upper abdominal discomfort, nausea, bloating, indigestion, or frequent burping.
H. pylori infection can contribute to inflammation of the stomach lining and is associated with certain types of stomach and duodenal ulcers.
Testing can help determine whether H. pylori is present and whether treatment should be considered.

H. pylori Testing

Several methods may be used to evaluate for H. pylori, including breath testing, stool testing, blood testing in selected situations, or testing performed during an upper endoscopy.
The most appropriate test depends on your symptoms, medical history, current medications, and whether you have previously been treated for H. pylori.
Your provider will discuss which testing method is most appropriate for your individual situation.

SIBO and H. pylori Are Not the Same Problem

Although SIBO and H. pylori can both cause digestive symptoms, they are different conditions.

SIBO primarily involves abnormal bacterial activity in the small intestine, while H. pylori affects the stomach lining.

Because symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and indigestion can overlap, it is important to determine the underlying cause rather than assuming that all digestive symptoms come from the same condition.

In some cases, evaluation for more than one digestive issue may be appropriate.

When Should Testing Be Considered

Testing may be considered when digestive symptoms are persistent, recurrent, or unexplained.

Symptoms that may lead to further evaluation include:

  • Persistent bloating or abdominal distention
  • Excessive gas
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Unexplained nausea or indigestion
  • Early fullness after eating
  • Food-related digestive symptoms
  • Recurrent symptoms after previous digestive treatment

Testing recommendations are based on your overall medical history and symptoms, so not every patient requires the same evaluation.

Timing and Test Preparation

Proper preparation is important because certain medications, supplements, foods, and recent treatments can affect breath or stool test results.

Depending on the test, you may receive instructions regarding:

  • Antibiotic use
  • Probiotics
  • Acid-reducing medications
  • Laxatives or digestive medications
  • Diet before testing
  • Fasting requirements
  • Smoking, exercise, or chewing gum during the testing period

Always follow the specific preparation instructions provided for your test. Do not stop prescription medications unless you have been instructed to do so by your healthcare provider.

What Happens After Testing

Once your results are available, your provider will review them alongside your symptoms, medical history, medications, and other relevant findings.

If testing identifies SIBO, H. pylori, or another digestive concern, treatment recommendations will be discussed based on your individual results.

Treatment may involve medications, nutritional strategies, additional testing, or evaluation of factors that could be contributing to recurring digestive symptoms.

Follow-up may also be recommended to assess your response to treatment.

Looking at the Whole Digestive System

Digestive symptoms are not always caused by a single problem. Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, and abdominal discomfort can have many possible causes.

A comprehensive digestive evaluation may consider factors such as stomach function, intestinal motility, diet, medications, metabolic health, previous infections, and other gastrointestinal conditions.

Our goal is to evaluate the broader digestive picture and develop a personalized plan based on your symptoms and testing results.
